When I was 10 years old, my parents adopted their best friend’s daughter because he had asked them to. He had said that he trusted no one more than them to give her a proper family. His daughter was around 2 years old then, and he wasn’t able to take care of her. He was on the brink of bankruptcy. My parents had jumped at the opportunity to adopt her. They loved her. Whenever we went over to their place, they smothered her with gifts. I was 10 at the time and didn’t understand their infatuation with her.
